Faleagafulu Leaupepe Nigel Vagana
Founder and Director
Nigel is a dual rugby league international having represented both New Zealand and Samoa in his 14 years as a professional rugby league player. He is a World Cup 9s and Tri Nations winner with New Zealand, has received multiple NRL awards, has captained New Zealand and has played in three World Cups , his final as Captain of Toa Samoa in 2008. He retired as New Zealand’s all-time leading try scorer at international level and is still the only player in the history of Rugby League to have topped the try scoring charts in both the Southern (NRL) and Northern (Super League) Hemispheres elite Rugby League Competitions. Nigel retired in 2009 and was employed as the NRL Education and Wellbeing Programs Manager. He headed up the NRL Pacific Cultural Wellbeing Program which has gone from strength to strength since inception. The program is now widely regarded as the best in Australasia run for elite athletes.
Nigel returned to New Zealand developing Wellbeing programs for Elite Rugby League athletes and officials moving from community pathways into professional systems. He co designed the current NZRL Organisational Wellbeing Plan, the first of its kind in NZ Sport, and has only recently stepped down as the GM of Football and Wellbeing for NZRL.
Nigel has been invited as a Keynote speaker, and to present, to many elite organisations around the globe including the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Australian Defence Force, The Australian Federal Police ( AFP), Cricket NSW, The US Professional Association of Athlete Development Specialists ( PAADS) which includes the National Football League (NFL) , Major League Baseball ( MLB ), National Basketball Association (NBA ), LPGA , Womens Tennis Association ( WTA), Major League Soccer ( MLS ) and more. He has also presented at UCLA, Boston College, University of Hawaii, The University of Utah, The Rugby Football League (RFL) in England, Universidad Catolica de la Santisima Concepcion ( UCSC ) in Concepcion and the NZ Embassy in Santiago , Chile.
Nigel has been involved in numerous community arts and outreach programs helping to empower, support and showcase individuals and organisations across the region. Casula Powerhouse, Carriageworks and Australian Museum, Groundswell Outrigger Festival ( Sydney), Faataua Le Ola ( FLO ) suicide prevention ( Samoa ) and the Pasifika Film Fest to name a few.
Nigel highlights the importance of developing the person before the athlete. He is a big advocate in helping organisations to understand and develop their own culturally comfortable environment. Nigel is of Samoan heritage and was born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand.

Dr. Roannie Ng Shiu

Roannie is currently a Co-Director of Te Poutoko Ora a Kiwa | University of Auckland Research Centre for Pacific and Global Health and a Principal Research Analyst for Malatest International.
Roannie has a strong background in research design and conducting research projects of all types, including qualitative, mixed-methods, longitudinal and cross-sectional studies. She has strong project management, stakeholder engagement and evidence-based policy
development skills.
Roannie has vast research and evaluation experience in the Pacific region, Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia and the United States. Her most recent collaboration with the Lancet Countdown focuses on climate change and health policy development for
Small Island Developing States. She is skilled in engaging with Samoan communities being able to hold conversations in both Samoan and English.

Dr. Kealiʻi Kukahiko
BA; MA; PhD
Hawaiian
Dr. Kealiʻi Kukahiko is an institutional analyst for the Office of Hawaiian Education, and a lecturer in the Ethnic Studies Department for the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. His research investigates the historical context of contemporary circumstances in Hawai’i, which helps to inform the Educational P4 (practices, projects, programs and policies) that recalibrate the course of Hawaiian Education towards a desired futurity. Other published research includes issues of Pacific Islanders in College Football, and Critical Service Learning in Higher Education.
Keali‘i received his BA, MA and PhD from UCLA in Higher Education and Organizational Change (HEOC), and currently lives in Kea‘au on moku o Keawe. Keali‘i enjoys spending time with his four sons (Kekoa, Makoa, Kaleimamo‘oka‘ala and Kaleiwaihonahalia), daughter (Kau‘ilaniowaipunalei) and wife (Kalehua).
